I do what I do for Chalkboard as a volunteer. It is part of giving back to the community. I wouldn’t do it for pay — it means too much to me.
Which is part of why I won’t become a Medium member. If people want to read my stuff, it makes me happy. As an American waiting for SSDI to decide that I am disabled, I can’t earn money. If I do, it can be claimed that I am “not really disabled.” Once I get approved, then I might add a Patreon profile, etc. (That may still be awhile… I’ve only been waiting since Dec. of 2015.)
What I will never do is pay Medium to write on the site. It’s a long held belief of mine: Never write for a company that wants you to pay to write for them. I understand why Medium has chosen to go with the paywall, but I don’t like it.
My third reason? Plain and simple: Too many bugs in the code and holes in the design. We all know they are there, but we work around them. If I believed that Medium was going to fix some of the bigger issues that impact me daily, I might be a bit more open to paying to become a member.
Right now, I don’t see that happening.
(And this is probably way more than anyone wanted to know.)
