Thanks for asking, David. I take what you might call a merged approach. I publish my pieces as stand alone pieces, but I make sure that I mention the writer who inspired the piece. Then, at the bottom of the piece, I drop a link to the piece that inspired me.

If you put the link on it’s own line and then hit the return key, Medium will turn it into a preview of the piece.

If the piece is a prompt piece, I also go drop a link to my piece in a response to the prompt. That way, others are sure to see it. I know some writers drop the link in a response whether it is a prompt or not.

As for the image, here’s a trick: Go full screen when writing your response. (There’s a link to do so right next to the publish button.) Once you are in full screen, you can add an image!
